Choosing the Right Web Mapping Application Interface JSA GIServices provides the advantage of different options to satisfy a wide range of applications when considering web mapping. Several of these platforms are highlighted in this article along with each of their advantages and disadvantages. The highlighted platforms include: Adobe Flash; ArcGIS Server using the Flex API and Google Maps API. The Adobe Flash Player has been utilized since the mid 90’s and is installed on 98% of all computers with internet browsing capabilities in the United States. Flash is a great front end vehicle for delivering content rich and eye pleasing web mapping applications. JSA GIServices creates web mapping applications served to the Flash Player two ways: through Adobe Flash animation software and ArcGIS Server Flex development environment. The advantage of Adobe Flash is that applications can be created that are highly transferable, small in size and rich in content. This entire application is only 224kb, yet it delivers GIS functionality. Transferring this application between computers is as simple as copying one file. The disadvantage of this type of application is that the maintenance and updates are all manual. JSA GIServices also develops web mapping applications using ArcGIS Server as a backend and Adobe Flex for creating a visually pleasing front end. The advantage of using Flex is the ability to pull live GIS data from multiple sources and combine them into one application. Flex applications use ArcGIS Server as the data server which means geoprocessing tools and scripts can easily be integrated into your applications. An additional advantage of Flex and Adobe Flash applications is their ability to be embedded in an html wrapper to preserve the custom look of your existing website. Google Maps can be embedded into your website to provide an address or direction finder without having to exit your website to use Google Maps.
